The Backdrop

In the far future, humanity has escaped the confines of the Sol system. Utilizing dark space, starships use dark matter drives to travel within a star system. Larger ships have inter-system dark energy drives that travel between systems using the dark space interstellar network. No longer do ships rely on older dark gate technologies for transit and are free to expand and explore vast regions of space never thought possible to reach.

Eventually, humanity ventured so far away from Earth that the people living on the fringes only knew of the Earth from historical documents. This region of space is known as the Dark Fringe due to how little dark space jump nodes there are between star systems. Eventually, the jump nodes connecting this region to systems closer to Earth collapsed and were unable to be transited with dark energy drives on ships.

The Dark Fringe area carried on without worrying about a thought of Earth. Earth became a relic of the past, folklore. Today, the Dark Fringe systems span many stars, but few connections exist to the greater galaxy and those that do are unstable at best. This is the universe of Dark Fringe.
