It’s a Trap! (Part 2)

As the NBS Radiant Dawn powered up its sublight engines, Commander Rebecca Johnson felt a knot form in her stomach. She knew they had been lured into a trap, but there was no turning back now. The carrier was their home and they would defend it to the end.

“Red alert!,” she ordered over the comm. “All hands to battle stations. We may have been caught off guard, but we are still the best-trained crew in the fleet. Let’s show these pirates what we’re made of.”

The crew scrambled to their stations, their hearts pounding with adrenaline as they prepared for the imminent attack. The NBS Radiant Dawn had a squadron of fighters, but they were outnumbered by the pirate vessels that had jumped into the system. The carrier’s heavy guns could take down a few of them, but not all of them. This was going to be a difficult fight.

Suddenly, the ship shuddered as the pirates opened fire. Dazzling lights flashed across the bridge as the ship’s engines were hit by a missile barrage. Commander Johnson gritted her teeth as she realized that they had been successful in disabling the engines.

“Damage report!” she yelled.

“Engines are down, but the rest of the ship is holding steady,” the chief engineer replied.

“Good work. We’re not out of this yet,” Commander Johnson said.

She quickly sent a dark space message to HQ, requesting backup. It would take some time for them to arrive, but she knew they couldn’t hold out forever.

“Launch the fighters,” she ordered. “We need to buy ourselves some time.”

The squadron of fighters launched from the carrier, their engines roaring as they engaged the pirate ships. The battle was fierce and intense, with particle beams crisscrossing the void of space and explosions lighting up the darkness.

The NBS Radiant Dawn was taking heavy losses, but the crew refused to give up. They fought with every ounce of their strength, determined to protect their ship and their fellow crewmates.

As the battle raged on, Commander Johnson felt a sense of pride in her crew. They were holding their own against the pirate onslaught, but she knew they couldn’t keep it up forever.

Suddenly, the comm crackled to life. “Commander Johnson, we’re receiving a transmission from the pirate fleet,” the communications officer said.

“Patch it through,” she replied.

The face of a grizzled pirate captain appeared on the viewscreen. “Surrender now and we’ll spare your lives,” he said.

Commander Johnson clenched her fists. “We will never surrender to pirates,” she replied.

The captain chuckled. “As you wish. But know that this is your last chance.”

The battle continued, with the NBS Radiant Dawn taking more and more damage. Commander Johnson knew they were fighting a losing battle, but she refused to give up.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, reinforcements jumped into the system. A fleet of ships appeared on the horizon, their engines blazing as they joined the fight.

The pirate ships, outnumbered and outgunned, quickly retreated. Commander Johnson breathed a sigh of relief as the battle came to an end.

But she knew they had suffered heavy losses. The NBS Radiant Dawn was badly damaged, and many of her crewmates had been injured or killed in the fight.

As the ship’s repair crews began to assess the damage, Commander Johnson, would use this moment to make sure that it would never happen again. Who was this pirate that almost took down a carrier? Where did they get the ships?

There were too many unanswered questions floating in Johnson’s mind. There was no time to contemplate that as repair crews arrived from the fleet to assist in getting the vessel underway once again. This likely wasn’t the last time that these pirates would show themselves…
